    Much ado about nothing.

Yes, many, perhaps even most, of the players on the team are Christians. But many are not, and the owners, manager and players apparently have no problem with them. Indeed, as the writer notes, the owners et al are respectful of ANY player who has “character” (whatever that means, since the presumption that it means “Christian” is just that: a presumption), whether or not they are Christian. I am sure the team is happy with Green, Matsui, Herges, Fogg and other non-Christians.

Indeed, the writer proves his outrageous bias (as well as his lack of research) when he talks about how the Rockies should focus on “getting good players.” Apparently, he is unaware that many of the players on the team – including Holliday, Helton, Tulowitzki and Hawpe – hold National League season records (or are in the top three) in almost every single category (home runs, rbis, extra base hits, etc.), and the team holds almost every National League record for 2007, including batting average, fielding, etc. Funny how he even forgets to mention that…they played the World Series! I guess they must be pretty bad to have made it there! Indeed, also unmentioned is that the Red Sox have the second highest payroll in baseball, and thus, like the Yankees, can afford to try to “buy” a World Series. Indeed, with the exception of Pedroia and Ellsbury (who are admittedly both great farm team picks), most of the fielders – including the “bats” of Youkilis, Ortiz, Ramirez and Lowell (among others) – were “bought” players, whose combined salary is well over $125 million (of a total of ~$165 million total payroll). The vast majority of the Rockies team (with the exception of Helton and one or two others) were “home-grown” on the Rockies farm team; indeed, the payroll for the ENTIRE Rockies team is under $75 million. That this “farm team” of youngsters, on a team that has only been in existence for 16 years, made the World Series to battle a largely “bought” team that has existed since the beginning of baseball (and couldn’t even make the playoffs for over 60 years!) speaks volumes more than all the snide and sarcastic remarks of the writer.

These are obviously VERY good players, many of whom (but by no means all) happen to be Christian. That the owners and manager have made a decision to look for “character” (again, whatever that means…) as an important trait in their players doesn’t seem to me to be a “bad” thing. Would that many of the obnoxiously arrogant players on the Yankees and Red Sox (among other teams) had as much humility and “character” as those on the Rockies. Now THAT would be something to write about!

    Peace.
