Re the first Op-Ed, and the claim that the SARI will “keep us safer without sacrificing civil liberties,” it will do nothing of the sort: there will be no balance. Even the ACLU, which initially supported the SARI, now believes it will not work.
Consider also the source of this piece: John Farmer, who was senior counsel to The 9/11 Commission. And we KNOW what THAT was about!
No, I will tell you what the SARI is. It is the lead-up to the re-introduction of the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Act (VRHTA), which passed the House in 2006 with only a few votes in opposition. As I have noted before, the VRHTA will make the Patriot Acts look like child’s play. It would make certain acts and speech actionably “treasonous.” Indeed, it is so ambiguously written that one could be accused of treason for publicly reading the second paragaph of the Declaration of Independence (the one about “abolishing “destructive” government).
This needs to be watched carefully.
