Re the growing pressure on Obama to back off from his no investigation/no prosecution stance re the CIA torture interrogations and the Bush Administration complicity therein, has it occurred to anyone that Obama may very well be manipulating this? That is, he made it clear – even before the release of the memos – that he does not want to be seen as “partisan” in this regard; what amounts to a “Dems” v. “Reps” situation.

However, by deliberately releasing the memos (and, my guess is, he will do more things to inspire further outrage against Bush, torture, etc.), he can personally maintain his stance as he himself helps continue to build the pressure. In this way, if (and when?) he “flip-flops” on this, he can claim to have been “forced” into undertaking an investigation (i.e., appointing a special prosecutor or other approach) because of the political and public outcry.

In this regard, is Obama even more masterful than we give him credit for?

    Peace.
