    I believe the Gore campaign’s single most critical error was overestimating the intelligence of the American public. Even had Gore not come across as an erudite “wonk,” this mistake would have cost him the election.

    P.T. Barnum once said, “No one ever went broke overestimating the intelligence of the American people.” One might re-phrase that re politics by saying, “No one ever won an election by overestimating the intelligence of the American people.”
