War’s Sacred Toll

Last week marked the second major bombing of the mosque at Samarrah, the most holy house of worship for Shi’ite Muslims. A year ago its famous Golden Dome was destroyed by explosives, and last week it lost its twin minarets. That would be tragedy enough, but there is much more behind this story. Last week’s attack on a shrine is part of a tragic new trend whereby each side in the Iraqi civil war attacks the holy places of the other side, feeding a war of retribution…BS
