It is questionable whether we ever should have gone in to Afghanistan. Certainly we should not have gone in for an extended period of time. Any student of history knows perfectly well that Afghanistan is a quagmire not possibly subjected to invasion for any extended period of time. Practically a military scene like ours is not prepared for guerrilla warfare. We should have been out of there a long time ago and Obama was wrong to keep us in for so long. mbPosted by Michael Butler, Sunday, June 9, 2013

George ..Right now inside Syria, Hezbollah terrorist fighters – backed by the Syrian government, Iran and Lebanon – are fighting Al Qaeda, Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood terrorist fighters – backed by the U.S., Israel, the Eurozone, Saudi Arabia and Qatar .. Not only did the U.S., Israel and Saudi Arabia largely create, sponsor and fund Al Qaeda, but also two other groups fighting on the side of the Syrian rebels: Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. This is a proxy war. [] the U.S., Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and their allies back the Sunni jihadists against Shia Muslims. Indeed, the U.S. is involved in a religious war – between the two factions of Islam (and is actually backing the most violent elements) – as part of a geopolitical strategy to exert control over the natural gas marketyeah you can pretty much boil the whole "War on Terra" down to Sunni v Shia .. read more

Mitchell in The Nation ..Is history repeating itself? [] The New York Times, as it did in the run-up to the 2003 Iraq invasion, seems to be promoting []some kind of dramatic U.S. intervention in Syria, based on WMDs. Once again we’ve seen overheated front-page news stories, based on slim evidence, and columns by [the moustache of understanding] Thomas Friedman, Bill Keller and others .. Also in a re-play, reporters for McClatchy’s D.C. bureau are expressing sensible skepticism .. One of the reporters in those much-hailed, in retrospect, Iraq stories is still at it on Syria: Jonathan S. Landay.. read more

Kevin Gosztola: The United States Is Fighting How Many Wars?
Gosztola in FDL ..With neoconservatives and neoliberals amplifying calls for US military intervention in Syria, it is worthwhile to take a moment and consider all the places in the world, where the US currently has forces engaged in daily operations .. By mid-2010, the Obama administration had increased the presence of Special Operations forces from sixty countries to seventy-five countries. SOCOM had about 4,000 people deployed around the world in countries besides Iraq and Afghanistan [including] Iran, Georgia, Ukraine, Bolivia, Paraguay, Ecuador, Peru, Yemen, Pakistan (including in Baluchistan) and the Philippines. These teams also at times deployed in Turkey, Belgium, France and Spain. JSOC was also supporting US Drug Enforcement Agency operations in Colombia and Mexico.. read more
