The recent revelations about Alberto Gonzales’s midnight visit to the ICU bed of the ailing Attorney General have opened a door on John Ashcroft’s relationship with the Bush Administration and his very real opposition to many of the more extreme elements of Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld’s antiterrorist agenda.
