Libby Verdict Analysis: For an opaque White House, a reflection of new scrutiny

The Bush White House has been remarkably successful at suppressing negative press and defending itself against inquiries, at least until the last elections empowered the Democratic Party. However, prosecutions can backfire: recall the impeachment trial of Bill Clinton, also based on a charge of perjury. One is left wondering whether I. Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby will recant, and reveal what he knows now that he is threatened with prison. If he does, he will be following a well worn path: remember James McCord in the Watergate investigation and Alan Fiers in the Iran-contra hearings, both of whom recanted past versions of events under threat of prison…BS
