Various military figures have been saying that there are not enough troops on the ground to do the job properly – whatever that means.

In other words, the CIA were trying to punch holes in AQ years before 9/11, so the US wasn’t so much of a ‘sleeping giant’ as I thought, and there was more reason for AQ’s action than I thought.
He also says ‘More 9/11-like disasters assuredly are on the way….’. In doing so he completes his own portrait.
He does not of course say specifically how many more troops he thinks are required, or exactly how long they would need to wrap things up, but I am sure that these are small questions in his mind. Lets bring back military conscription, beef up the defence budget, and sock ’em good!
What evades Mr Scheuer is who exactly he is going to sock. The enemy will not just stand there. They will vanish, only to appear somewhere else.
Iraq must be rebuilt in one form or another, and there are some small signs of this happening. The visit of Iran’s President last week was highly significant, and as one of the articles posted here noted, very under reported. Recognition of the Iraq government by it’s neighbours is key to allied withdrawl.
Thank you for posting this, Michael. As I am sure Mr Scheuer would say ‘know thine enemy’.
