    Most independent estimates I’ve seen put the percentage of people in prison for low-level drug crimes at 1/3 to 1/2. Some estimates are as high as 2/3. Even the lowest figure would mean that almost 1 million people in prison are there for low-level (i.e., non-violent) drug offenses. But as the article suggests, can you imagine the blow to the prison-industrial complex if they were forced to release 1/3 of all prisoners?!
