The article suggests that the Democratic candidates should be more strident in their message concerning America’s extrication from Iraq. It makes the point that this has become entagled with the word ‘security’, on the basis that Iraq is a training ground for AQ. Such an argument would justify an American presence in virtually any country in the world. This is a fair point.
So far, so good. Then the writer goes on to say, ” Both Clinton and Obama favor withdrawal, although her plan seems more stretched out than his.” This is a calculated slide away from specifics and brings me back to a point made a day or so ago. Barack says the US will be out of Iraq within sixteen months of him becoming President.
This is something a President or a Presidential hopeful just should not say. It could lead to the loss of many lives and the loss of any chance of freedom for the people of Iraq. If the enemy know you are committed to withdraw within that time frame, you have just gifted them the win. You have just told them how to put your troops on the rack, as they have full knowledge of their overall strategy. You have also told them when they will be able to turn up the heat without fear of counter attack.
I am sorry, this is a major blunder on Barack’s part. No one should commit themselves to any kind of a time table on this issue.
