What an inadequate title is attached to this article which starts with a comparison of the Vietnam War and the Iraq surge, then goes on to talk about the US Panamanian adventure where Mr Chomsky trips himself up a bit by talking about how the US left a tame government in control there and yet the present government have declared a day of mourning to commemorate the American invasion and are no friends of America at all. You can’t have it both ways, Noam. Either Panama is part of the unseen American Empire, or it’s not.
Chomsky also talks about Iraq’s refugees in Syria and Lebanon. He also goes on about the US stance towards Iran, then switches to North Korea and how the US is not living up to it’s agreed commitments there, and all this to explain why Iraq isn’t featuring in the 2008 election.
By the end of it all – and it is a good ten minute read – you certainly know where our friend is coming from, but as to answering the original question, umm. I remember something about how the surge has something to do with it, oh and a comparison to the Russians in Chechnya…. in other words throw everything against the wall and hope that something sticks.
