Mike Huckabee bio: ‘A Higher Power’

By Liz Clarke | Saturday, December 15, 2007 | The Washington Post

I present this NOT because I agree with this man’s views or beliefs, but in the name of understanding our foes in a fight for the hearts and minds of America. His bigotry and zealotry make my blood run cold. I think he is the smiling mask that conceals the “Christian Taliban”, a group capable of unimaginable damage to our battered democracy….BS

Although I do not support Huckabee, I read not one word of bigotry in this article, and his zealotry is only evident in his faith and calling as a minister. And there seems nothing wrong with that.

That said, I agree that there seems no question that he would bring to the presidency an “unhealthy” (for democracy) dose of quasi-theocracy, and would clearly add (perhaps immensely) to the damage already created to the separation of church and state.

But it would seem prudent – to say nothing of honest, with both others and ourselves – to separate our personal visceral and/or emotional reactions to faith/religion and some of the people who “represent” it from “branding” people with epithets like “bigot” when nothing in the article posted suggests it.

    Peace.
