Setting aside the excessive use of force and tasering themselves, this was the other thing that absolutely freaked me out about the incident: that not ONE person came to his defense; not ONE person came over to witness the brutality. Indeed, at least a few people were laughing during the incident – as if it was funny that someone was being arrested and tasered simply for exercising their right to free speech. Yes, maybe he went over his allotted time, and, yes, maybe his questions were a bit heavy-handed, and, yes, maybe he is known as a practical joker as well. But nothing – NOTHING – he did excuses arresting him, much less using excessive force and tasering him.

I hope this was only a reflection of Florida students and not of the country in general. I would hope that if that incident were to happen at, say, Berkeley or NYU, the outcry – in the moment – would be huge, and masses of people would consciously and deliberately bear witness, if not “put themselves in harm’s way” in solidarity.

Or is solidarity simply a thing of the past?

    Peace.
