Red/Blue Nation:

The so called polarized state of America is a myth manufactured by incumbent politicians to suit their needs – which largely revolve around getting reelected – and suit the needs of the media – which largely revolve around promos and resume building. The vast majority of Americans are in the “middle.” They haven’t “moved” left or right – only the money does. In this election, depending upon who does the measuring – at least $3 billion was spent telling us we are divided. I wonder how folks in the Sudan feel about that.

Nader is fond of saying we restrict our system to two parties and deny equal access to any other party. The fact is that America is a one-party system – the Incumbent Party. In the entire 465 seats of the House of Representatives do you know how many changed hands on Election Day? Seven. How is that possible? The same math is at work in the houses of each state – driven by collusion between the two parties revolving around gerrymandering voting districts to be “safe.” In other words 458 seats in the House are not subject to the will of the voters; only to the will of the big money flowing their way.

The Democratic Party is on the verge of becoming a marginalized regional party. They have continued to narrow their “single-issue voter” base to the point where the tipping point has been reached; that is, a majority of Americans no longer respond to their demagoguery. This is dangerous ground, as the Republicans require the illusion of competition to continue raising big money.

The Republican Party has done a more effective job of reaching the voters required to win national elections. They also have been more effective in the states; controlling 30 state legislatures. Their task is daunting however – to continue to maintain the premise that they serve the interests on Middle America, while taking in money from big corporate interests.

Either way, despite all the hype about this past Election Day – 100,000,000 eligible Americans chose not to vote, and that salient fact says more than all the editorials coast to coast.

It is amusing to read complaints from the left regarding the anti-Gay marriage initiatives in eleven states. Even the People’s Republic of Oregon passed this measure by 57%. America was built upon protest against unresponsive authority. When the Supreme Court of Massachusetts decided to tell the rest of America how their marriage laws would be run they got the best of American tradition in return – an overwhelming revolt at the polls. This was a good thing.

Even funnier was the Democrats trying to slip two white liberal wealthy Senate attorneys off as “mainstream.” It didn’t work. Voters were not fooled. The fact is that if the Democrats had run a moderate for president they would have won this election. The fact that they cannot find one says much more about their party than it does about America.

More later…
