Report on Bogus Police Bust Stuns Ireland

http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/world/wire/sns-ap-ireland-police-corruption,0,1469869.story?coll=sns-ap-world-headlines

DUBLIN, Ireland -- The official report read like a screwball comedy: an
attention-craving woman pretending she's an IRA spy, two detectives lying
their way to glory on the strength of her fantasies, and incompetent
commanders failing year after year to notice anything fishy.

In reality, Morris found, all of the alleged IRA finds were manufactured by
the two detectives in cooperation with McGlinchey.

(Other officers) had already identified McGlinchey as an erratic crank

The trio then conspired to plant the IRA gear in often implausible
circumstances, such as by the road in full view, something the IRA would
never do.

Morris is still exploring a second Donegal case involving allegations that
police framed an innocent man for murder. McDowell said he expected "worse
to come" in the judge's next report.

The report proved an immediate best seller, with lines forming outside the
government bookstore in Dublin to buy copies at $6 each. State broadcasters
RTE dramatized portions on radio Thursday using actors in the roles of the
judge and key witnesses.
