In praise of mild reforms

The much maligned initial Civil Rights Act of 1957 – the one passed under the Eisenhower administration by a coalition assembled by Senate majority leader Lyndon Johnson – made it possible to pass the the MUCH broader Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. A similar tactic of staged reform, accomplished with patience, persistence and moderation, might well benefit efforts to pass immigration reform, equal rights for women, privacy protections, gay marriage and other progressive causes…BS
