Sara Bongiorni is the author of “A Year without ‘Made in China’: One Family’s True Life Adventure in the Global Economy.” Here she gives a capsule version of her book, in response to a reporter’s question about what American consumers could do to protect themselves from potentially toxic products from China. Bottom line: Chinese made goods are everywhere and a “normal” American life is impossible without them; labels tell us almost nothing; Chinese ingredients and materials are frequently present in goods labeled as non-Chinese.
