While we should certainly keep an eye on what the so-called “Christian Right” is doing, I find all of these types of articles overly alarmist.
Despite their “powerful friends,” the Christian Right is losing power at this point, not gaining it. This was shown in the last election, when the number of voters who self-aligned with the Christian Right went down for the first time in almost a decade. In this regard, the “Christian Right” used to represent almost 40% of Christian voters. Now, with the increase in “moderate” Christians (including many in the evangelical community), that number is below 35%, and dropping.
Yes, the “Christian Right” and its agenda is still a threat to the separation of church and state, and, as noted, must be watched, and countered whenever and wherever possible. But to suggest, even weakly, that they have any chance of increasing their power to the point at which we need worry about a quasi-theocracy – or anything even close – is simply fear-mongering and alarmism.
