Obama vs Romney, the debate that needs to be had in the US. Gideon Rachman, FT

This is a very intelligent, insightful article. The only problem that I have with it is that I am not sure how many Americans want to indulge in any intelligent, insightful debates at the moment. To quote ‘The Second Coming’, yet again, “The best lack all conviction while the worst are full of passionate intensity”. My only conclusion is that many otherwise mild seeming and decent Americans, although they would never say this openly, hate and loathe the idea of a smart, articulate and good looking black guy in the White House so much that they would vote for anyone, however abhorrent or anything, however abominable even if that clearly involves M.A.D. (in cold war parlance), if it has a chance of bringing Obama low. It astonishing, ridiculous and frightening. PLEASE TELL ME I AM WRONG!
