RFShunt: Wing Nut Wurlitzer Spinning Itself into a Corner
Whodathunkit, the right-wing spin machine is fallible. It’s clear the resonance and speed of the Occupy Wall Street movement took the talking-point factories of the right by surprise. Not that they didn’t respond quickly when #OWS began to break through their media firewalls – they did. They always do. The moment it became clear that the Zuccotti Park occupiers were not going away, the airwaves, print commentariat and blog-comments suddenly and monolithically filled with the same lament. The protestors had no clear leader, no unified message. They probably felt proud of themselves, leaving the offices of the PR firm that day, for getting a counter-message out so fast. Maybe they had an extra martini after work to celebrate. Boy was that premature. Because what they created was a question in the minds of those who ordinarily shun politics, which is most of America. They created a mystery, and what do people love more than a mystery? Who are these protestors? Where did they come from? What do they want? What’s the message, dammit, what’s the message? We want to know!
