Message from a Megachurch

By E.J. Dionne | Tuesday, December 5, 2006 | The Washington Post

Important story: Senator Barack Obama was invited by Rev. Rick Warren, leader of a large and usually politically conservative (and Caucasian) evangelical church in the foothills of California’s Santa Ana Mountains. The topic was AIDS. The occasion was World AIDS Day. Obama was a huge, inspiring hit, and spoke masterfully in a way that connected with his audience of people that would have traditionally been his opponents.

Political analyst Dionne thinks this is the beginning of a withdrawal of evangelical Christians from their role as a rubber stamp for the Republican Party. The moral arguments alone make their case that they have gotten too politicized, at the expense of truly Christian acts of charity, kindness, and love for one’s fellow man. Inspiring stuff and very encouraging. There is a link to the full text of Obama’s speech within the article. I have repeated it here, just below the link to the main editorial…BS
