Re the texting article, setting aside the possible psychological problems discussed, the physical ones could have been – and were – predicted. By yours truly, among others.
For example, when in-line skates were first introduced, I (and others) predicted that within five years we would begin to see all sorts of new physical problems, particularly with ankles, knees, and feet. Almost five years to the day after their introduction, an article appeared in the Science Times section stating…EXACTLY that: that doctors were beginning to see all sorts of new medical problems related to the skates, particularly re ankles, feet and knees.
When I first hear about texting, I (and others) predicted that it would only be a matter of time before doctors began seeing new medical problems re fingers and wrists. And here we are – even LESS than five years later – and these problems are already appearing. And although the article only discusses thumbs, keep in mind that thumbs are connected to tendons that run up the wrist and arm: this means we are also likely to see a new increase in carpal tunnel syndrome and related repetitive motion conditions. (You heard it here first…)
One does not need a degree in medicine to have seen this coming – or predict future problems. Common sense is often as powerful a tool as medical science.
Peace.
