Mr Ali is blaming Germany for the collapse of Yugoslavia and the disbanding of the Yugoslav Army. He says, ‘This was a country in the middle of Europe where different communities lived with each other for 50 years quite well.’
However, anyone at all familiar with the Bernard Shaw play ‘Arms And The Man’ would know how the region was thought of in the years prior to that. It was a ‘war zone’, which was why Shaw set the play there.
It could well be surmised that it was in fact the Yugoslav Army, for most of the time under the direction of Marshal Tito, which kept ‘the country’ together.
Mr Ali has a point. it might have been better if Yugoslavia had remained and the bloodshed spared, and maybe Europe could have played it differently, but hindsight is a very cosy thing to have when making such judgements, and the fact is that these new nations have emerged, and we have to get on with it as it now stands.
