Actually, while this is quite heart-warming, it is a fallacy that animals will not come near humans when injured. In fact, many animals have, and will, seek assistance from humans if humans are around. This includes domesticated animals like dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, etc., and “wild” animals, including both small (some birds, some rodents) and large. And I would agree that this shows a certain level of intelligence. But more importantly, it shows an almost incredible level of trust.
