Actually…this is not ENTIRELY correct.
In fact, the larger companies – including Circle Line, New York Waterway and, of course, the Staten Island ferries – were called in and coordinated by the NYC Office of Emergency Management (OEM). What IS true is that hundreds of smaller, privately-owned craft simply “showed up” to help.
That IS extraordinary, and enormous credit goes to those people and their spontaneous and selfless efforts. However, the overwhelming majority of those who were evacuated by water were part of an equally “spontaneous,” but coordinated, effort by the NYC OEM and the companies with the largest boats.
