“No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.”

And many people got into office the same way: realizing how ignorant and manipulable a large swath of the electorate is. After all, that’s what got us not one but two terms of GWB (yes, some electoral chicanery and the SCOTUS helped), derailed health care and many other Obama initiatives, and created the tea party set (and the “new populism” in general).

The Dems lost the governorships of Virginia and New Jersey, and then what was arguably the most secure Dem Senate seat in history, that of Ted Kennedy. And there is an even chance they will lose Obama’s own Senate seat in Illinois. Yes, Gillibrand won in a long-time Republican district. But this may be exactly why Obama, Schumer and others continue to interfere in local NYS primary politics: they fear that Ford and Paterson would be weaker against G.O.P. challengers than Gillibrand and Cuomo.

We underestimate Palin’s chances – and the power of the “new populism” – at our peril: if all we do is yuk it up and pretend it is all just a joke, she will laugh all the way to the White House.
