“United States exports of coal grew from 49 million tons in 2006 to about nearly 59 million tons in 2007.” that is a huge increase and as the article points out, entirely unsatisfactory in ecological terms.
Posted on 20-Mar-08 at 3:42 am | PermalinkOn the one hand, America is once again a major coal exporter, thanks largely to the dollars low value, and on the other hand, America is clamping down on the number of coal burning plants being built at home.
But, what difference where the coal is burnt as long as it is? The global pollution is the same.
It sounds rather like the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing, but maybe the thought is for America to move on to cleaner technologies. Certainly the US’s investment in biofuels has skyrocketed, and while this might well prove to be a dead-end street, investment in other clean, renewable technologies could start to turn the tide.
That sounds a lot more optimistic than I actually feel about it.
