The article says, “We’ve witnessed dramatic improvements in life expectancies over the past century. It’s time we dramatically improve the way we measure age as well.” Of course, this is right but at the same time it is not right to think that a 65 year old can continue to do the same things he or she did at 50.
Posted on 13-Mar-08 at 3:04 am | PermalinkThe other factor the article ignores is that by living longer, there are many more of us on the Planet at any one time, and there are already far too many of us here, consuming, polluting, using up what is left of the world’s recources.
What is becoming apparant however is that this aging generation of baby boomers are far less inclined to look at retirement as the time when they are put out to grass. They are just as likely to take a leaf out of Michael’s book and continue to make a significant contribution to society in one way or another.
You can’t alter the pensionable age for this generation, simply because they have in good faith made their plans around those dates, but you can expect them to be more contributive than their forebears were. The more society can facilitate that, the better.
