No it’s not at the moment but if anyone can make it happen it is David Petraeus, who all the thinking military people I know, believe to be the best there is for this particular job. This is not to say that invading Iraq in the first place was not a reckless, botched and fundamentally criminal enterprise, which has caused untold misery to the Iraqis and made the world a more dangerous place. I just hope that Petraeus is allowed to give it his best shot but it won’t be easy. For the ‘surge’ to have a realistic chance of succeeding the US should have committed double the personnel but politically that would have been impossible. I am encouraged that Petraeus has apparently won over one or two of the Sunni chieftains and warlords but it is going to be an uphill struggle. We have to hope that he succeeds.
