An Ultra-Intrusive Approach to Iran

By Geoffrey Forden and John Thompson | Sunday, December 10, 2006 | The Boston Globe

Geoffrey Forden is a former UN weapons inspector. Sir John Thomson, a former United Kingdom permanent representative to the UN, is the founding chairman of the Nuclear Suppliers Group. Both are researchers at MIT’s Program on Science, Technology and Society.

They propose a program of ‘intrusive’ weapons control inspections while leasing to Iran the means to achieve their goal of peaceful use of nuclear energy. This would be the Very Expensive Carrot the West offers in order to enlist Iran as an ally in the struggle to control the chaos next door in Iraq. In effect, they propose renting to Iran either Western or Russian gas centrifuges for uranium enrichment – enclosed in ‘black boxes’ that prevent one from copying their design. The Big Carrot would come with a Big Stick of enforcement and inspections. Obviously, this idea has boldness and lots of potential risks – but it is an original and potentially ‘doable’ program that deserves our consideration…BS
