Byron York, Whaute House correspondent for The National Review, talks about the state of affairs in the Republican party from the viewpoint of a deep insider. Among the many jewels in this piece: “…the Foley affair has exposed deep fissures within the GOP a few weeks before midterm elections…No one camp was able to take control, thus allowing (Speaker Dennis) Hastert to continue as the longest-serving Republican speaker in history.”

Most alarming for the Republicans facing re-election bids next month is the prospect of something like “….the post-Watergate election of 1974, when Republicans took a horrendous beating. GOP pollster Richard Wirthlin…coined the phrase ‘the embarrassed Republican vote,’ referring to those party members who were so appalled by events that they didn’t vote.”

Or to put it another way (paraphrasing George Will): if the Democrats cannot capture control of Congress from an opponent in such disgrace and disorganization, they should all find another line of work. As for me, this committed voter will be right there, wallet in hand, helping them do just that…BS
