This superb and masterfully written essay starts with a Cold War story that I won’t even try to describe – so as not to spoil the surprise. Carroll then drops a second bomb, using his story as a metaphor for the blundering course of the Iraq War, and the way it has made our enemies cohesive, and he does that using pieces of the recently leaked National Intelligence Estimate.
