This peice from FAIR founder Jeff Cohen is the most forwarded article from the Common Dreams archive. Amidst all the mainstream media hysteria over Chavez’ “el diablo” comment, it’d be great if everyone who watches ABC/NBC/CBS/FOX/CNN .. or reads NY Times/Wash Post/LA Times/USA Today/WSJ/AP/Reuters/Time/Newsweek/US News .. gets a chance to read this as well.
Looking for an easy way to protest Bush foreign policy week after week? And an easy way to help alleviate global poverty? Buy your gasoline at Citgo stations. Of the top oil producing countries in the world, only one is a democracy with a president who was elected on a platform of using his nation’s oil revenue to benefit the poor. The country is Venezuela. The President is Hugo Chavez. Call him “the Anti-Bush.” Citgo is a U.S. refining and marketing firm that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Venezuela’s state-owned oil company.
This is really what it all comes down to. The US and other “first world” countries don’t want to let developing countries develop on their own … period.
