As you might surmise from my vocation, I am not a particularly big fan of Harris, most of whose first book (The End of Reason) I would happily debate him on.
However, I agree with 95% of his comments here. (Indeed, he almost seems to be “lightening up” (LOL) from the rabidity of his anti-faith/religion stance in his book.)
I find it particularly disturbing that Ratzinger – who, before becoming a cardinal, much less Pope, was among the most respected theologians in the world – would have such limited knowledge of the Qur’an to suggest that it is, “in toto,” “evil and inhumane.” Despite many passages that are highly questionable from the ethical, moral and theological standpoints, the majority of the text deals with many of the selfsame topics as Judeo-Christianity: peace, brotherhood, community, compassion, personal spiritual struggle.
