Scientists have long known that the health of amphibians – and particularly frogs – is a critical measure of how a particular biosphere is doing. But it is not the only measure. Another is the prevalance of hitherto unknown or rare species in a particular area.
This very interesting NYT article discusses the discovery of an enormous number of lionfish in NY waters. And in addition to their previous rarity, lionfish are particularly venomous, and can be aggressive.
