RE: Women in the Muslim World: Pakistan’s Charade Debate

This Boston Globe Op-Ed piece is by Imaduddin Ahmed, an editor at The Friday Times and a former employee of the Aurat Foundation, a women’s rights organization. The essay does a lovely job of filling in the back story about General Musharraf’s recent moves to broaden women’s rights in Pakistan while still appeasing the Islamic right wing he needs to remain in power. Former President General Zia al-Huq sent women back into the Dark Ages with his implementation of a bizarre mutant form of Sharia law called the Hudood Ordinances in 1979. You will emerge from this article knowing what that is, why it is still important 27 years later, and you will get another taste of the mind-boggling complexity of politics in today’s Islamic world – another reminder that They understand Us MUCH more effectively than We understand Them. They have been saying that more and more loudly lately, but it has been true for centuries, since long before the Crusades. We misunderestimate them at our own peril. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED…BS
