A couple more suggestions:

Book: Greenwich Village by Robert Heide & John Gilman
Both are alums of Caffe Cino, La Mama, etc. OFfers a
present-day "tour" of sites with past histories.

Play: "Kennedy's Children" by Robert Patrick
A portrait of 60s New Yorkers, through the
recollections of a Viet Nam vet, a downtow (off-off
Broadway) Actor, a School teacher, and an Uptown
actress-- Shirley Knight won a Tony for that role.
