Are there any books, or novels, that you would recommend, for giving a
good history, and/or feel, for the Greenwich Village of the mid/late
'60s?

[ ... ]

Also, has there ever been a decent take on the hippie scene of the
mid/late '60s, on the East Coast?

Try this:

"New York in the Sixties," photographs by Klaus Lehnartz, text by Alan R. Talbot (1978).

And peruse these bibliographies I compiled for the research library at the Vietnam Era Educational Center:

"The Sixties" http://www.njvvmf.org/osb/showitem.cfm?Category=115

"Vietnam War Protest and Resistance" http://www.njvvmf.org/osb/showitem.cfm?Category=116

Links to other topical bibliographies are posted on this page (FYI): http://www.njvvmf.org/osb/showitem.cfm?Category=103

And, as long as I'm FYI-ing stuff from our website, here's the Staff page with my photo: http://www.njvvmf.org/osb/showitem.cfm?Category=72

Anyway, Jim, I hope the other stuff above helps.
