Amen!  In fact, although I'm sure you (and others) will get annoyed with me,
you know I can't resist putting a Christian spin on this.

You mention "the lesson of evil that is taught in most cultures."  The
"lesson of evil" offered in the Judeo-Christian Scripture and construct is
one of the most "specific."  You talk about "serving the dark powers of this
planet."  We give those dark powers a name: Satan, and his minions.

We believe that Satan "controls" people via four primary things: power,
money, sex (and "immorality") and beauty (i.e., focusing attention on the
"physical outside" rather than on the "spiritual inside").  The first two
are the products of "greed" - Satan's most powerful "weapon."  The second
two are distractions, which keep us from seeing past the "facades" and into
the "truth."

It would take far too long to go into the details of all this.  Instead, let
me simply provide a few Scriptural quotes that seem prophetic in this
regard:

"That we should no longer be children, tossed about to and fro and carried
about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning
craftiness of deceitful plotting."  Eph. 4:14.  ("Cunning craftiness" is
always ascribed to Satan.)

"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but
according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will
heap up for themselves teachers, and they will turn their ears from the
truth, and be turned aside to fables." 2 Tim 4:3  ("Truth" is from God;
"fables" are from Satan.)

"For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work...the coming of the
lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and
lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception..."  2 Thess. 2:7-10

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come.  For men
will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, blasphemers,
disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving,
slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors,
headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a
form of godliness but denying its power."  2 Tim 3:1-5

According to Scripture, Satan is the "great deceiver," the "father of lies."
As someone pointed out during our recent discussion, there is that great
line in The Usual Suspects when Verbal Kint says to Agent Mujon, "The
greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't
exist."

Given all that you point out in your enlightening missive, it seems to me
that the only thing missing is an ascription to - a naming of - the "dark
powers" you mention.  You (and others)may see it as an amorphous, if sadly
understandable, outgrowth of humankind's propensity for greed, power,
control, etc.  The Judeo-Christian construct has a name for it: Satan.  And
we see his hand in all of the things you mention.
