Iranians Abroad: Community Demographics

It is very difficult to come up with the exact number of Iranian-Americans
or Iranians who live abroad. Our research indicates that more than 3.5
million Iranians live outside of Iran. This number includes Iranians who
live abroad on a part time basis. US consensus recorded the number of
Iranian-Americans at 338,266 in 2000. The Iranian Embassy in Washington
records much higher numbers. It is believed that many people either did not
disclose this information due to the political climate or did not indicate
their origin because the survey did not have a separate option for Iran. A
recent study conducted by the Iranian Studies Group at MIT
<http://web.mit.edu/isg/> estimated the number of Iranian-Americans to be
690,000. Adding to this number, the population of Iranians in Canada, we
estimate close to 1 million Iranians in North America. Iranian-Americans
score very high against the national average when it comes to education, and
income levels. 84% of Iranian-Americans speak fluent English, 78% have a
college bachelors degree or higher, 43% are in professional or managerial
positions, 35% are in the technical and administrative field and an
estimated 92% have a mortgages. Probably the largest population of Iranians
outside the country is in Los Angeles, with more than 400,000 Persians.
Canada and Europe are the next two contenders where a large part of the
Iranian communities reside. It is believed that more than 50,000 Iranians
live in Vancouver, and more than 65,000 live in Toronto. Germany, France,
the UK, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, and the Benelux all have strong Iranian
communities. Australia and New Zealand are also home to large populations of
Iranians
