Call for 'Bearded Lady' Is Only Half Answered
The New York Times - July 6, 1973

A casting call yesterday for "bearded ladies" by Tom O'Horgan, the whirlwind force behind "Lenny" and "Jesus Christ Superstar", did not require police action to contain the crowd.  One "bearded lady", very roughly speaking, showed up.

Mr. O'Horgan wants seven for "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band," his new rock musical.  He invited them to the Lunt-Fontaine Theater yesterday, or today, or tomorrow at 10 A.M.  He also summoned singers, acrobats, baton twirlers and roller skaters.

Two roller skaters came, one without skates, and Joan Byron showed up with a device called an iron jaw.  "You put it in your mouth and you can hang by your teeth," she said.

Rumors of the arrival of a bearded lady proved to be half-true, at least.  It was a bearded man in a red velvet gown.  "I'm a dancer and acrobat," said Ron Capozzoli, 26, doing back flips of balletic grace.
