Mr. Washington, 24 years old, suffered burns over at least 50 per cent of his body as well as internal injuries when he jumped out of a window to the roof of an adjacent building to escape the blaze that apparently broke out in a mattress in his bedroom.

The actor was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital and placed in the intensive care unit.

His role in Hair, at the Biltmore Theatre, 261 West 47th Street, was taken over by a standby, Donnie Burks.
