As in so many cases (re both economics and socio-politics), Krugman hits the nail on the head. What Obama sadly does not seem to understand is that we CAN’T move forward without coming to a true “catharsis” of the past. You can’t sweep it under a rug, any more than a psycho-emotional problem can be overcome and moved beyond by sweeping it under the rug and not dealing with the factors that created the underlying fear, anger, or behavior. This is axiomatic.
Almost as good as the Krugman piece was Nick Kristof’s piece on Sunday, which can be found at http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/26/opinion/26kristof.html?ref=opinion&pagewanted=print.
The groundswell – both political and public – continues to grow. There will come a point at which Obama will simply not be able to ignore it, or try to set it aside. The more important question is: what is the correct point at which to actually create truth commissions, Congressional investigative panels, and/or a special prosecutor? Do it too early and the risk id cutting off further whistleblowing and revelations. Do it too late and the risk is that the groundswell subsides.
This is almost certainly the most defining moment of our time since 9/11. It must not be whitewashed the way that was.
Peace.
