commondreams.org—a portal site that collects a lot of the most important articles each day, maintains archives of past ones, and has links to all the media around the world (side left mid-way down).
and of course the bbc, which although state-owned, still seems to have a wide range of in-depth articles as well as graphic explanations about topics (like global warming, etc). There are also country profiles and timelines of events of each for background.
One of the worst parts about our media now is the reporting of present events with NO CONTEXT of the history that brought us to this event. Always absent is the CIA involvement in fomenting revolt–like in Afganistan BEFORE the Russians invaded it.
