What would JFK do?

By Jeff Jacoby | Sunday, February 17, 2008 | The Boston Globe

Seems every Op-Ed piece we read on Obama these days calls for more specifics (‘what does he really mean by change?’ is the mantra), but each and every one acknowledges that the man is more than a candidate. He has the magic – the charisma, eloquence and ease of JFK. The tide of ‘Obamamania’ is turning into a movement as he marches toward the Democratic nomination.

This piece – which I DO NOT AGREE WITH – is something different, a protest against certain emotionally charged symbols displayed by certain Obama campaign workers. This is BAD! It could turn into another Swift Boat fiasco! Obama needs to watch out for stuff like this – it is a long, long way to the election.

Obama’s lead over Hillary is tenuous. He may well face a genuine military hero who has dignity and charisma of his own in John McCain. His behavior and that of his volunteers needs to be absolutely impeccable and exemplary if we are to achieve his dream of transforming political and social change. He needs to convince millions of doubting Americans to take a romantic leap of faith, like the one our country took in 1960. There must be no “October Surprise” from the right, who will do anything to hold onto power.

Presented in the name of seeing many views and knowing our foes….BS

The article is more a rant against Che than anything else.
Bill’s comments are more interesting. Barack is aparantly in the business of convincing ‘millions of doubting Americans to take a romantic leap of faith, like the one our country took in 1960.’ ‘Romantic’ is not the way I remember it, and ‘faith’ only in as much as you would have faith in a stiff broom.
However, if Barack want’s to win, he should follow Bill’s advice.
I would bet that Hillary would be far more able to cope with the savaging McCain is likely to hand out. A ‘romantic leap of faith’ might well end you up with McCain as President, a scenario that Bill is well aware of and is far more significant than the article itself.
