One Response to “Liberalism and Secularism: One and the Same – Stanley Fish”

Very interesting. I cannot disagree with any of his basic premises. I would add, however, that the Constitution does not guarantee freedom “from” religion, but freedom “of” religion. Thus, while the separation of church and state must be maintained in order to prevent either from truly controlling the other and thus taking total power (i.e., a theocracy on the one hand, or the abolishment of religion on the other), the founders clearly intended that religion SHOULD have a place in the “public sqaure” (what Fish calls the “marketplace of ideas”).

    Peace.
