Not so fast. According to the World Life Expectancy Database, not one single disease that this article claims is directly related to a “Western diet” turns out that way.
Pancreatic Cancer. This first nine countries are all in Eastern Europe. The 10th is Austria. None of these countries is known for their “hamburger-based” diet. Japan ranks 16th – higher than almost every Western country. The U.S. ranks 32nd.
Breast Cancer. The three top countries are Uruguay, Armenia and Lebanon. Not exactly hamburger-eating countries. The U.K. ranks 20th, the U.S. is 61st.
Prostate Cancer. “Island” populations (Dominica, Maldives, Grenada et al) rank highest here. Again, few hamburgers to be found. Norway is the first “Western” country on the list, at 27. The U.S. is near the bottom at 103rd.
Colon Cancer. Again, Eastern Europe takes the first 7 places. Canada is 8th. The U.S. does not even rank in the Top 20.
Liver Disease. All the top countries are in Africa and the Middle East. Once again, few hamburgers here. Former Russian “satellites” also rank high (e.g., Kyrgystan, Turkmenistan et al). Mexico is 17th. The U.S. is once again near the bottom at 123rd.
Type I Diabetes. The island of Nauru (which I doubt has even SEEN a hamburger) ranks first. Middle Eastern and African countries once again outrank Western countries. Of the latter, Finland, Sardinia, Italy, Canada and Sweden are highest. The U.S. once again ranks pretty low.
