A drive toward fuel economy

By Bilal Zuberi | Monday, August 13, 2007 | The Boston Globe

The defeat of a bill to mandate improvements in the gas mileage of US vehicles leaves the US no better off than it was 20 years ago. It’s ironic, considering that many of the cars driven in Europe, where vehicles must achieve no less than 35 miles per gallon, are made in the US. One problem is fuel subsidies, which artificially hold down the price of gasoline here. The real price of gasoline in the United States, without the subsidies, would not differ much from the $6 per gallon that it is in Europe.

What would you drive if you had to pay more than $100 the next time you filled up your tank? I know I would look for better performance with higher fuel economy.
