“…Amid the many 9/11 remembrances in recent days, the presidential campaign was starting in earnest. With the debate and the speech, the Republican field is set, and President Obama’s challenge is defined. Republicans must overcome, astonishingly, a near party-wide abandonment of science, while the Democratic incumbent grapples with breakdowns of confidence in the economy, the wars, and in himself. If only, against the 9/11 backdrop of memory and grief, we could invite in a newer, better phase for American politics….”
